What if you hadn’t said yes?

There’s a thought plaguing me a bit today. Here we are at the end of the year and it’s going to be a busy couple of months for our little Herbalife family. Next month there’s the annual Herbalife extravaganza in Johannesburg, and of course that’s a huge deal and a whole bunch of our local team will be making their way there to learn from and be inspired by the best that this company has to offer. In November, my family (mom, dad, brother) will be jetting off to  Lisbon for the President’s Summit where they will learn and be inspired even further.

That’s quite a bit of adventure ahead, isn’t it? I mean, come on: Lisbon! If my thousands of online travel friends are to be believed, Lisbon is one of the most underrated cities in the world. In fact, in the wanderlusters community it is regarded as one of the best cities to visit.

And my family is going there just by the way. No big deal. It’s just par-for-the-course around here these days.

Which leads me to my plaguing thought: What if my dad had said no…

Imagine it! Imagine my dad had left his meeting with Rob Green and never given Herbalife a second thought. Imagine if he had handed the products over to my mom, and not taken her seriously when she told him that they had made her feel quite incredible and that her energy levels were up for the first time in years. Imagine if they had just shrugged it all off and moved on.

Just imagine.

There’d be no fantastic travel tales to share around family braais. There would be no fulfilling days of helping people improve their lives in uncountable ways. There would be no exceptional health benefits. There would be no financial freedom.

So I do imagine sometimes that he had said no. And it makes me ever so grateful that he said yes. Because every day I am reminded that we have a really good life and a whole lot of the credit for that life goes to this incredible company that makes exceptional lives a reality for so many people.

So thank goodness he said yes.

Quick Tip: Always Make a Great Shake

When it comes to talking about shakes, I always make it very clear to folks that they should put a little effort into making their shakes taste good, to ensure that they continue to find their shakes enjoyable. This is incredibly important when making long-term lifestyle changes because if you aren’t enjoying your shake, it is going to be very easy to stop taking it even after you have started experiencing positive results.

I think that something psychologically positive happens when you really enjoy what you are feeding your body. I’m not talking about satisfying that crazy and unexplainable need to devour a KFC family meal all by yourself, I’m talking about that feeling you get when you fuel your body with something positive.

Have you ever eaten something healthy and sort of felt like your body might be sighing with relief? I love that feeling! That feeling motivates me. And because of this feeling, it is so important to make a bit of an effort with your shakes.

Do you have a favourite shake recipe? I’d love for you to share it!

Otherwise if you need some ideas why don’t you pop in at the Lifestyle Wellness Hub at The Crusaders in St. George’s Cricket Grounds and speak to the professionals? We’ve gotten really good at this shake lifestyle!

How about we love ourselves?

Can I get very real with you for a moment?

If you’re here, reading this, then it’s because you’re either involved in Herbalife or somehow directly or indirectly linked to someone who is. You might be here because you got here by accident, or maybe you were searching for answers to your lifestyle management issues. You might be here because it’s Springtime now and you’re freaking about about your summer body.

It doesn’t really matter why you are here, I’m just glad that you are.

I hope that you’ll indulge me for a moment. I would like to strip myself down a bit and allow my vulnerability to show – possibly a little too much. I just have something important to say, and it cannot be said from behind walls.

If you, yes you, are here because you are ready to make a change to your wellbeing, your health your lifestyle, I want you to do something very important for me first.

I want you to give yourself a break. Stop beating yourself up about your thighs. Stop staring at your double chin in disgusted judgement. Stop lambasting yourself for each and every perceived imperfection on your person.

You are beautiful. You truly are. The lumps and bumps are just lumps and bumps. The inability to run around the block? That’s just a weakness. So what? Your freckles. Your pale skin. Your chicken arms. Your stringy hair. Your knobbly toes. These are just things. They have no real value.

You have real value.

So just stop. Love yourself. Embrace yourself. Dare to call yourself beautiful. Give yourself a moment to really look at yourself through the eyes of an artist. You are beautiful.

Because you know what? You can keep beating yourself up about everything that’s wrong, or you can love yourself enough to start making the right choices.

Let’s start our morning with yoga because we love ourselves.  Let’s go and sweat it out at Fit Club because we love ourselves. Let’s change some of the dangerously bad habits because we love ourselves.

We are indirectly taught at a young age how to submerse ourselves in self-loathing. We go from innocent children, unaware of our  (mostly non-existent!) imperfections, to suddenly having to deal with the pressure of peer acceptance. For many of us this does not work out very well. Sometimes the people around us teach us very quickly how to hate ourselves, and then we spend years perfecting that art. We spend our time comparing ourselves to others, and we hardly ever allow ourselves the luxury of giving ourselves a break. We deny ourselves the joy of going to the beach because we do not approve of how we look in our bathing suits. We deny ourselves the body & soul happiness that comes from doing all sorts of things (dancing, running, going to the gym, playing sports we love) because we have learned to be afraid of making fools of ourselves. How much do we miss out on simply because we are too hard on ourselves? Because we refuse to forgive ourselves for not being perfect?

So right now…how about you and me give ourselves a break? How about we embrace our not-so-perfect thighs and baby-stretched bellies and love ourselves anyway? Because you know what? That love can play a huge role in helping us get to where we want to be.

Herbalife (and life in general) is not about turning you into a stick-thin model with zero imperfections. Herbalife is about helping you reach your Level 10. And your Level 10 has nothing to do with anybody else. You’re not going to get there while you’re throwing hate at yourself. It may not necessarily be scientific, but I do sometimes believe that self-hate is more damaging to our healthy lifestyle efforts than chocolate is. It is detrimental to your health in the way disease can be detrimental to your health.

So today, you and I are going to stop that, ok? And when we forget, we  are going to remind each other. Can we show ourselves the same kindness that we so freely give to others? Because I’d kind of like my kids to be kind to themselves. And I’d really like my family members to be kind to themselves. And my friends. And all of my Herbalife my team members. Some of us just need a little help sometimes.

Let’s focus on our Level 10 for one reason and one reason only: because we love our bodies.

There’s no place for hate within these bright green walls anyway!

Active Weekend: Pokemon Go

So yes, the hectic Pokemon Go craze has come and gone and the hype surrounding this little game has died down significantly. The benefits of playing the game, however, have not. When this game cam out I must admit that it was easy to get addicted to all the feel-good stories surrounding its launch. So many people came forward to confess that the game had gotten them out of the house because the geo-location aspects mean that sitting on your couch is not really an option if you want to progress at all. If you haven’t tried the game yet: do. Even if it’s just for a weekend. You see, it makes you walk. Ad it makes you walk a LOT. I remember hearing how so many people had actually started losing weight because of this little game, and all because they were hunting little critters.

In Port Elizabeth, the best places to play the game are at The Donkin Reserve and at The Boardwalk as these two places mean that you can walk around a lot but also accomplish a lot in the game at the same time.

I won’t lie, the game is addictive, but it’s a sort of silly fun addictive that will most likely wear off at some point. Just have fun with it while it lasts.

And the best part? You can play it as a family and have a lot of fun doing it. All without ever feeing like you’re in the middle of the gruelling task of “exercising”.

Love & Advice from Elizabeth Gilbert

Dear Friends,

I was lucky enough to come across a post written by Elizabeth Gilbert (the author of Eat, Pray, Love) and I would very much like to share it with you in a moment. Because I have grown up in a Herbalife family and because we are still so actively involved in the Herbalife community it stands to reason that the topic of what it is to be a Herbalife distributor is often on my mind. Obviously this can mean to many different things to so many different people. I have met some Herbalifers who have immediately filled me with awe, love, and respect, and I have met some who have baffled and unsettled me. I have met perfectly shaped gorgeous beauty queens (and kings) and I have met matronly folk with lumps and bumps who are big foodies like I am. Always this has kind of excited me. I think, for some people, they can look at a not-perfect person and go “how dare that person represent the brand!” (these are the people who unsettle me) but for me, I always look at it and think  isn’t it wonderful that all these different people, in their different shapes and sizes, are all part of one big great company? There is no standard shape or size that allows you into the club. You don’t have to be of a certain age or race or background to belong. I LOVE that about Herbalife. It is all those different people who I have seen and met and experienced over my years of being in a Herbalife family that have made me love this company. Those people have proven to me that this product really is for everyone and that the business can work for anyone who wants it to work for them. (more…)
