Whenever we get to the end of January I find myself considering resolutions again. If you’re anything like me you spend the last few days of December and the beginning of January lost in grand thoughts of improbable resolutions. I have to wonder if these resolutions do not set us up for disillusionment. Often what happens, especially with health goals and attempts at lifestyle changes, is that we tend to give up on resolutions almost immediately because we take on too many of them. Goals are such an important part of life, of course, and they are undoubtedly a pastime to be encouraged, but what if we’re biting off more than we can chew? It seems to me we could be.
I propose that we step back from the overwhelming resolutions that we try to tackle all at once and break them down into something a little more bite-sized. How about, instead of giving ourselves a long list of new rules to live by, we start with just one?
Drink more water.
Our part of the world is experiencing overwhelming heat, which means that dehydration is more likely than normal. We all know we should be drinking water and yet we still aren’t always doing it. So why don’t we all start with just this one resolution? We can practice the water for a while, and then add the next one.
Once you’ve mastered sticking to one resolution, it becomes easier to stick to the next one, right?
(that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!)
